Fighting The Winter Blah

March 7, 2015 by Kara

I hate to be anything but positive when it comes to the blog or social media, but last week was a struggle for me. I know it has so much to do with our eternal winter. This beach-loving, slippah-donning gal is weary. It is times like these that I get online and order a bathing suit. But retail therapy is not always the answer, the best answer anyway.

This week I decided to try something different to combat the blah. I have taken on some new challenges in the hopes that I might distract myself from the view out my window and chill in my bones. I recently blogged about the battle of my mind in the face of challenges, but I think I am in some desperate need of a reason to pat myself on the back. I don’t necessarily share these challenges so that you would pat me on the back, but I do hope that you would check in on me and see how I am fairing in the fight.

Challenge #1 “Go Black”

For a while now I have wanted to eliminate the cream and sugar from my coffee habit. Those that know me well, know that I am passionate about coffee. I love the warmth. I love connecting with others over a good cup. I love sitting at my computer and using its power to get the creative juices flowing. One of my favorite things to do while traveling is to find my favorite local non-Starbucks (irony alert: I am currently sitting in Starbucks writing this post) coffee shop. But I have always kinda felt like a pseudo coffee lover because I haven’t been able to drink it without my beloved cream and sugar. Recently, a group of fellow-coffee loving friends tried to convince me that if I drank my coffee black for a week, I would not go back. In an attempt to be healthier in my habit and feel more confident in my coffee lover status, I finally got to the place where I could accept the challenge. It is Day 4 and my teeth will likely be yellow in a week but I am still in the fight!

Challenge #2 “Max Out”

About six months after I completed my treatment, my husband and I started doing Insanity workouts in our basement together. If you have ever done it, you know that they kick your butt. In my case, these workout DVD’s (by now we have almost all of Shaun T’s workout sets), they kicked my butt….and changed my life. I credit Shaun T, my husband (who has more or less been my “coach”) as well as some tweeks to my eating habits over the last three years for a twelve pound weight loss. But over the last few months my motivation was waning and the lost pounds were slowly creeping back. It was time to pick up the latest and greatest Insanity Max 30 and “press play” for 60 days. It is Day 5 and I am still in the fight, getting my heinie handed to me but still in!

Perhaps there is a challenge you have been wanting to take on to distract you from the blah? Would you share it and let us encourage one another in the fight?
