Day 24: Take Her A Meal Or Two

October 24, 2014 by Kara

When I say we received meals for 6 months while going through treatment, that is no exaggeration. I sat and counted the months one day and it really was that long. Sure we got them more frequently at certain times during my treatment like after surgeries or in the first week after chemo infusions, but it still amazes me that people cared for us in this way for that long.

A few of the most amazing things about it was that some people provided a meal multiple times and some of those that delivered a meal had never met us before. I know the sacrifice of time and money it takes to provide a delicious, nutritious meal. So it awes me that people would make that sacrifice more than once and for someone they didn’t even know.

There were times that I wasn’t able to partake in the meals because I was too sick but the point is my family still needed to eat. I definitely didn’t have the strength to cook and it totally freed Blake up to work his normal schedule and care for me and kids when he was home.

So when I have people ask me what they can do for the Pink Warrior in their life and one of my answers is “bring a meal”, don’t underestimate the value of it. First of all, as Elizabeth said it is reaching out. It is also sharing your art, being her community and it keeps life normal for her kids.

If cooking a meal seems like too much in these busy months, then be the one to start the meal calendar at Take Them a Meal or other similar sites. One of our neighbors did this for us.  Six months of meals would not have happened if my neighbor had not taken that step.

Take-out from a place like P.F. Changs is always a great option too. I mention it because I love that they painted their horses pink for October and have this fun photo to share. For every sushi roll purchased or picture taken with their pink horses and posted to Social media with hashtag #PaintPFChangsPink , they will donate $1 to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.  What do you say we all get in on the fun?!
