What I Learned in March

April 3, 2015 by Kara

DABM2QYCqmcI used to think February was the roughest month but I learned that March is a close second for being my least favorite month of the year. It does have the redeeming quality of sometimes hosting Easter. But I have grown extremely weary of the cold here in the Mid-Atlantic (I think that is what we are considered in good ol’ Naptown).  I suppose it is nothing compared to the winters that Chicagoland and New England have seen this year. Now that March is a few days in the past, and I have started to see/feel the sun a few times, I can finally start considering what March had to offer.

I Can Drink My Coffee Black.  In my attempts to distract myself from the winter blah, I challenged myself to start drinking black coffee.  I learned that I can actually do it and do feel a bit healthier in the process.  Or at least I feel less guilty drinking so much when it isn’t loaded with the white stuff.

 2. Strep Doesn’t Discriminate.  I will spare  you the photo of this that was taken the following day when I decided I better get my daughter immediate medical attention.  Apparently, Strep infections can find their way into small breaks in the skin on the hand.  Who knew?  Now I do.

3. There Is Power In Remembering Loss.  A few years back on a girls’ getaway to celebrate my friend Caroline’s 40th Birthday at the Beach, I met Maria.  Last year, I heard about and followed Maria’s difficult journey through discovering that her unborn baby would not survive after he was born. On March 31st 2014, Maria gave birth and said goodbye to her baby boy, Gideon all in the same day.  However, in true warrior fashion, Maria has spent the last year proclaiming God’s faithfulness to their family on her blog True Worth. Many celebrated the life of Gideon with Maria and her family by wearing #gideonblue on Tuesday.

This last point makes me think about the significance of today {Good Friday}.  I am going to work really hard to stay conscious of the loss today.

At the sixth hour darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour.  And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, ‘Eloi, Eloi lama sabachthani?’- which means, ‘My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?’  Mark 15:33-34
